This is a Skill Level 1 occupation. The Australian government describes Biochemists as those who study the biochemistry of living organisms and the molecular structure and function of related components (Biochemists, ANZSCO Code 234513).

As a Biochemist in Australia, you will have to:

  • Study the forms and structure of bodily organs and tissues by systematic observation, dissection and microscopic examination;
  • Investigate the chemical composition and functions of living cells and their components, organs and tissues in humans, animals, plants and micro-organisms, and
  • Examine micro-organisms, such as enzymes and bacteria and use the knowledge gained to create and develop new, and improve existing, materials and processes.

To be eligible to work as a Biochemist, you need to have a bachelor degree in science or applied science majoring in biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical science or a related field. Postgraduate studies are a bonus!
